How should I prepare for laser hair removal?

Your hair in the treatment area should be shaved the day of your treatment prior to your arrival to our clinic. This helps make the procedure as effective and safe as possible. Hair removal methods such as waxing, tweezing, or threading should be avoided for at least 6 weeks prior to treatment. These methods completely remove the hair from the follicle leaving nothing for the laser light to be drawn to and making the treatment ineffective. It is recommended to only shave before and during your treatment series, as shaving does not remove the hair from the follicle.

Arrive for your appointment in loose, comfortable clothing.
Treatment area must be cleaned and shaved 24 hours or less prior to treatment.
Do NOT apply any products or makeup, including lotion, deodorant, powders or perfumes.
Avoid the sun exposure 4-6 weeks before treatment.
SPF 30+ sunscreen should be used throughout the course of the treatments to avoid any hypersensitivity to your skin.
Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen should be discontinued 7 days prior treatment and 2 weeks after treatment.
Please note, recently sun-tanned skin cannot be treated. Due to the increased risk of hypo-pigmentation, we may reschedule your treatment if you have had natural sunlight or tanning booth exposer within 2 weeks before the treatment.
The use of self-tanning skin products must be discontinued 7 days prior prior to the treatment.

How should I Care for My Skin After the Laser Treatment?

Laser hair removal can temporarily increase skin photosensitivity. Some people may also feel mild irritation or dryness. After the laser hair removal sessions, skin care may include:

Avoiding sun exposure for one week after treatment to reduce the chance of hypo-pigmentation.
To avoid skin irritation or damage, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
To treat sunburned or irritated skin, take Tylenol as directed.
Cool compresses or chilled aloe Vera gel may be applied after treatment if necessary.
For at least 2 weeks after laser hair removal, avoid any other laser treatments or chemical peels on the treated area.
Wait 24 hours after a laser hair removal treatment to apply lotion and other moisturizers
Try not to rub the treated area when cleaning. After gently cleansing the skin, pat it dry rather than rubbing it.
Contact our office if you notice any changes in your pigmentation, blisters, or prolonged swelling or redness.

Is laser hair removal safe?

Laser hair removal is a well-studied and safe method of permanently removing unwanted hair. Two of our primary goals in providing laser hair removal services are safety and satisfaction. As a result, the devices we add to our selection are thoroughly vetted for results with as few side effects as possible. The most common side effects of laser hair removal are mild redness and a sunburned sensation that lasts 24 to 48 hours. More severe complications, such as blistering, are uncommon.

Am I a candidate for hair removal?

If you’ve been told that you’re not an ideal candidate for laser hair removal because of your skin or hair color, the Lutronic Clarity II may be the perfect treatment for you. Our Clarity II laser is an advanced device, featuring adjustable wavelengths for each specific skin type, while minimizing the risk of discoloration or skin damage. This allows patients of any skin and hair color to be able to enjoy the benefits of laser hair removal. Candidates should meet the following general requirements:

Have no current skin rashes or infections

Are not recently tanned by a tanning bed or the sun

What should I expect during the treatment?

Does it hurt?

Most of our patients find the Lutronic Clarity II laser treatment extremely comfortable. While patients may explain a mild “snapping” on the skin as the laser is moved over the treatment area, they are more relaxed compared to their experience with other hair removal devices. Patients note they mostly feel a warm sensation, similar to a hot stone massage. Clarity has a specialized cryogenic skin-cooling system that provides a more comfortable treatment.

Can I get a treatment done over a tattoo?

If you have a tattoo, you can still get laser hair removal but not directly over the tattoo—the same goes with removed tattoos.

This is because, during treatment, the laser targets the pigment in your hair follicle to safely and effectively eliminate your hair at the root. However, the laser can’t tell the difference between ink pigment and hair follicle pigment. So if treated over the ink, pigment could scatter and result in a burn as it tries to escape the skin, or a damaged tattoo.

If you’re thinking about getting a tattoo, then laser hair removal is a great option to get beforehand. You can get a clean slate, so to speak, over the area you want tattooed.

How many treatments are needed?

Due to the staggered nature of the hair growth cycle, in which some hairs are actively growing while others are dormant, laser hair removal requires multiple treatments to catch each hair as it enters the “active” growth phase. The number of laser hair removal treatments necessary for complete hair removal varies from person to person, and depends on multiple factors: hair thickness, the area being treated, in addition to your hair’s growth cycle. Legs, bikini, under-arms could take 6 treatments. Other more hormonal areas could require 8 treatments. They are usually spaced 4-6 weeks apart to effectively reduce hair growth.

It is possible to achieve as high as 95% hair reduction. The remaining hairs leftover will be much more thin than before the treatments. it is also important to note that there will always be dormant follicles may become active over time from hormonal or age related changes. You may need a touch up session in the future. Some may need to have a touch-up once or twice a year, some need it in several years, and some never need to. It depends on the individual.

Can I go back to work after the laser treatment?

Yes, there is no need to stay home from work after laser hair reduction. You may continue your regular daily routine. It is best to avoid tight fitting clothing which can irritate the skin after the procedure. Avoid direct sun exposure after treatments. If you have developed any skin redness, avoid exercise, saunas, or hot showers until the redness or swelling has returned back to normal, usually within 24 hours.

Will I need to keep shaving after the treatment?

After the procedure, hair will continue to grow for 2 weeks after the procedure, but at a much slower rate. Here is the best part: Most of the hair will then fall out in about 3 weeks. Less hair will start to grow back by 4 weeks, sometimes it takes up to 10 weeks for the remaining hair to come in. Hair usually comes in less dense plus finer and finer after each treatment. At this point, you will then be due for another treatment and this process starts all over again. You will need to continue to shave, but much less often than before. Some report that they have only needed to shave once between the 1st and 2nd treatment. Some clients report that they need to shave 50% less than normal between the 1st 2 sessions, and then much less often between the final 3 sessions.

Are there any side effects or risks?

When areas of skin become lighter, this is called hypopigmentation. Their is a small risk of about 3-5% chance that the skin can become lighter in color after laser hair removal treatment. If you had had sun exposure during 2 to 3 weeks before the treatment, this has a higher likelihood to occur. This is also more common in darker skinned patients. Burns are rare, and hypopigmentation is uncommon, but sun exposure increases the risk. It is important to avoid direct sun exposure for more than 15 minutes 2-3 weeks before and for 2-3 weeks after your laser hair removal. This is why it is important that you wear sunscreen after laser hair reduction treatments.
